This is the first batch of releases of the annual update of emission factors in the emission factor library, released on September 8th, 2026.

New data

DEFRA (2026)

  • Activity-based emission factors covering multiple emission sources, including fuels, refrigerants, heat & steam, passenger & delivery vehicles, water, materials, waste, freight, business travel, employee commuting, hotel stay, and homeworking

NTM (2026)

  • Emission factors covering default and benchmark transport data, including passenger & delivery vehicles, business travel, and employee commuting

Energiföretagen (2026)

  • Supplier-grid specific district heating emission factor for Sweden. Data published in 2026 covers data for 2025 due to a one-year lag in reporting.

Green Deal co2emissiefactoren (2026)

  • Average district heating emission factor for the Netherlands

Trafikverket, emissionsfaktorer vägtrafik (2026)

  • Average distance-based emission factor for various vehicles in Sweden.

Data published in 2026 covers data for 2025 due to a one-year lag in reporting.

Drivkraft Sverige Beräkningsfaktorer (2026) & Energimyndigheten Drivmedel 2025 (2026) & Trafikverket Vägtrafikens utsläpp 2025 (2026)

  • Emission factors based on the average fuel sold in Sweden. Sources are combined in the emission factor library to enable reporting of tank-to-wheel (TTW), well-to-tank (WTT) and well-to-wheel (WTW), as well as to calculate distance-based emission factors. Data published in 2026 covers data for 2025 due to a one-year lag in reporting.

Cornerstone Sustainability Data Initiative (2026)

  • US-specific activity-based emission factors covering multiple emission sources, including fuels, heat & steam, transport, waste, business travel, and employee commuting
  • These emission factors were previously developed by EPA, but will now be maintained and updated by Cornerstone Sustainability Data Initiative.

IVL (2026)

  • Emission factors for train travel with SJ trains. Data published in 2026 covers data for 2025 due to a one-year lag in reporting.
  • For 2026 updates, SJ has commissioned a report by IVL, which is why the source is updated compared to previous years.

Hotel Footprinting Tool (2026)

  • Activity-based emission factors covering hotel stay

Position Green Sustainability Report (2026)

  • Average spend-based emission factor for Position Green services. Data published in 2026 covers data for 2025 due to a one-year lag in reporting.

Data changed

Energiföretagen

  • Energiföretagen has stopped publishing the annual Swedish average mix for district heating, therefore no updates are available for this factor. Users are instead encouraged to use the supplier-specific factors also made available by Energiföretagen. Unlike electricity, district heating isn't nationally interconnected, so a national average doesn't reflect a real system boundary, see Energiföretagen's Scope 2 reporting guidance for details.

DEFRA

  • District heating Scope 3 factor: As part of our annual review, we identified that the distribution loss associated with the heat network (Transmission & Distribution) was not included in the calculation of these Scope 3 emission factors. This has been corrected as part of the 2026 update, with the affected factors, including historical values, now updated to reflect this component. As a result of including this component, the affected emission factors have increased by approximately 27% compared to previous values.
  • Plug-in Hybrid Large Car Scope 3 factor: As part of our annual review, we identified and corrected an error in last year's factor, reducing it by 41% (0.00005316 to 0.00003353).

Upcoming releases

  • Emission factors covering country-average electricity generation factors in Europe
  • Expected release: Source data already published by source, but emission factor library updates are still pending IEA data to avoid partial updates of electricity-related emission factors.

IEA

  • Emission factors covering country-average electricity generation factors, T&D losses and well-to-tank emissions
  • Expected release: Still not released by IEA, expected in September/October and made available in emission factor library in October/November.

Exiobase

  • Emission factors covering spend-based global and regional cradle-to-gate emissions
  • Expected release: Still not released by Exiobase, expected at the end of 2026.

Finnish Energy

  • Average district heating emission factor for Finland
  • Expected release: No details on when updated data will be available.

CTR, HOFOR and VEKS

  • Average district heating emission factor for Denmark
  • Expected release: Data already published by source, but emission factor library updates are still pending other district heating data to avoid partial updates of district heating emission factors.

Green-e & e-Grid

  • Emission factors covering electricity generation factors in the US
  • Expected release: No confirmed dates on when updated data will be available, but generally this is in December.
